National Trakehner Mare Show Neustadt/Dosse, June 17th-18th 2004

Introduction

Like State Mare Shows, National Trakehner Mare Shows only tale place every seven years and are "by invitation only" - meaning only Verband pre-selected mares are invited so that the standard of the show truly mees National standards. The 2004 Mare Show was once more hosted by the exceptional East German State Stud in Neustadt/Dosse, a place with a very strong tie to the Trakehner breed and full of its own long history of breeding warmblood horses.

The mare show takes place over two days and consists of qualifying rounds where all mares are shown in their age classes and the best get selected for the finals the next day. Each Champion mare in her own class enters one final ring that then determined the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion mare for the entire event. Also, family classes are always in the middle of attention and this year was no exception. In the year of a National Mare Show, no National Champion mare gets selcted during the Neumünster days - that honor also takes place during the National Mare Show.

The Year End Grand Champion was the brilliant Anglo Trakehner mare Papagena-Go by Wörthersee xx-Hamlet Go, bred and owned by Trakehner Stud Gorlo of Melle, Westfalia. The mare showed exemplary movement with an outstanding hind end and even though displaying the TB type and showing that more maturation is down the road for her, there was no way to deny her overall high quality. She is only the second Anglo mare to ever win the Year End title, following another wonderful chestnut, the 1998 champion Helia by Elan xx-EH Rockefeller. The Grand Champion title of the show, and new National Champion mare was another chestnut, the brilliant Kate by EH Friedensfürst-EH Caprimond, who stunned everyone with her perfect combination of type and movement. She had a colt by Summertime alongside her (editor's note: that colt was later selected for Neumünster, see our NMS Archives for 2006). Two chestnut mares made the final day, and as if this was a sight for "quality over color", the Grand Champion mare family was that of Habsburg by Fahnenträger II-Fabian with her daughters Heavenly by Artistic Rock and Hippo's Hillary, also by Artistic Rock, bred by Hans-Eberhard Schneider of Alzenau, and owned by the Dutch Hippo's Stables (Heavenly is owned by Frederike Bünger of Ahstedt). All these mares displayed greatest frame and substance in combination with outstanding movement, especially from the haunches, and all of them were shining grey mares!! The reserve champion family was that of the elte mare Kandida III by Mahagoni-Erzsand (bred and owned by the Schühmann family of Kirchhain) with her three daughters Kaiserin, Kandela and Karlotta, all of them high quality daughters of the elite stallion Lehndorffs and again, two of them grey, and one chestnut!

In general, the overall high quality and the clear improvement of the breed over the show 7 years ago was astonishing. And of very special interest was the very high quality of the Anglo Trakehner mares, a fact noted by most of the judges and officials. And it didn't matter if the TB influence came through the dam, through the sire or even through Arabian elements, the very high quality of these mares clearly is an indication for the need of special blood and should also encourage breeders to follow that route in their programs!
