The International Trakehner Bundesturnier 2007 NOW WITH NEW PHOTOS!!!

The Trakehner family gathered in Hanover during the weekend of July 20th-22nd 2007. The Bundesturnier is the only championships of its kind in Germany, where one breed comes together to compare, compete, to select the riding horses for the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf, and to stage a nightime auction of elite foals prior to the main event in Neumünster.

Here is our report, thanks to our friends in Germany who forwarded results, impressions and photos. We will add more impressions to this report as they come in, so make this your stop on TI for the next couple of days if you enjoy Trakehner action!

3 year old riding horses: Stallion Class

This was a much anticipated class, since two premium stallions of 2006, Zauberfürst (by Interconti) and Krokant (by Lauries Crusador xx) showed up. Even more focus was on Ballzauber (by Axis), Darren Chiacchia's stallion that ended up grabbing the show earlier this year in Münster Handorf. And in the end, it was these three that made the class up among themselves. While many observers commented on Krokant not looking very good, ridden in too tight a frame (again) and lacking rhythm, he ended up as the reserve champion. Champion was Zauberfürst, who was supererbly ridden by Frederike Schulz-Wallner of the Bavarian State Stud in Schwaiganger. Ballzauber finished 3rd. All three were selected by the Verband to represent the Trakehner breed at the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf.

3 year old riding horses: Mares & Geldings Class

The class for 3yr old mares and geldings, also the round for the qualifications for the Bundeschampionat, was dominated by Bona Fides, a 3yr old mare by Cadeau - Kennedy. She won both the qualifying round and the finals. Second place in both classes was won by the 2006 NMS auction highlight Gute Nacht by Buddenbrock - EH Ravel, who is now owned by Gestüt Wiesenhof in Krefeld.

Interestingly, in this class only one gelding was able to place amongst the mares. The black Banderas, a full brother to Buddenbrock (EH Sixtus - Diamant), who was an approval candidate in Neumünster in 2006 and was sold to former Trakehner Verband Sales Manager Hella Kuntz, who was also riding him in Havover. Only Bona Fides was nominated for the Bundeschampionat.

4 year old riding horses: Stallion Class

This was another class with firce competition from some very high profile approved stallions. Both the champion and reserve champion from NMS in 2005, Herzensdieb and Imperio, were shown. Again it was the exquisite style of Frederike Schultz-Wallner that stood out and made Imperio the top of the class. The stallion impressed with a near perfect canter demonstration (9.5 for his canter) and while his trot is still somewhat out behind and could show more natural ability to sit, he was the best overall package of rideability, willingness, and dynamics. A stallion with similar movement and similar appeal is Canzler, who took second place. Unfortunately, Herzensdieb seemed to be enjoying himself a bit too much. While he impressed with exceptional sit and collection (involuntarely), he also got distracted more than once which was held against him in the overall scores. Still, there is a lot to celebrate for his owners, the Leatherdales in America: out of Herzensdieb's first foal crop came the auction highlight Bartok (dam by Preussengeist), who sold for 18,000€.

All three finalists were also nominated for the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf.

4 year old riding horses: Mares & Geldings Class

This class was also firmly in the hands of one horse: the premium mare Karena by Freudenfest from Gestüt Hämelschenburg impressed with the high quality of her three gaits and impeccable manners. Second place in both classes was won by the former NMS auction mare In Vita, a full sister to the approved In Flagranti (champion 2003), In Petto, and the premium mares In Farbe and In Zukunft. All these siblings are by Buddenbrock out of the elite mare Insterfee by Kennedy.

Trakehner Champions 2007

The overall show jumper champion is determined after three rounds at L and M levels. Quite a tour for the youngsters. In the end, the winner was Eruditas, a horse bred in Lithuania, by Viskis - Elektronas. He was ridden by Nerijus Sipaila, who had come all the way from Lithuania!

The dressage champion in 2007 was Karolinger I by EH Latimer - EH Hohenstein. The black stallion is now in training with Peter Koch (Avoni TSF; Shannon TSF; Konradi) and was the Medingen Auction price highlight two years ago (250,000€). Karolinger I won the dressage horse class at 3rd level and 4th level (83% and 75% respectively).

The eventing champion was L'Etoile (by Handryk - Altan II), ridden by Sandra Freeriks. The gelding placed 3rd in the event horse class at preliminary level (83%) and won the Horse Trials at prelim level the same weekend. A Youngster Eventing Champion was proclaimed out of the group of 4-5year old horses, and that was Karamica Piccola M by Windfall - EH Anduc with Kai-Steffen Maier. The full brother to this mare is Karambeau M, who is shown by Kai-Steffen at CCI** level now.

The FEI classes

The first S class of the show was won by Bonus, a full brother to Shannon TSF (Kostolany - Meilenstein). Places were taken by K2 (Stradivari - Inschallah AA), the champion in NMS in 2001, followed by Kaiserdom TSF (EH Van Deyk - Gajus), the full brother to Dorothee Schneider's exceptional Kaiserkult TSF, then followed by Avoni TSF (EH Caprimond - EH Marduc) and Peter Koch and the last in the places was Monte Castello (by Biotop - Falke), the first foal ever sired by Biotop in Germany.

The order almost didn't change at all for the Prix St Georg class. Bonus, K2, Kaiserdom TSF, Avoni TSF and then Sea Cloud by EH Hohenstein. The Inter I Freestyle again saw Bonus as winner, and again followed by K2! It is really amazing to see the turn-around that stallion's career has taken ever since his owners, the Sprehe Stud, decided to place him with one of Germany's most known Grand Prix riders, Falk Rosenbauer. Third place was taken by Avoni TSF, followed by Sea Cloud and Monte Castello.

The Inter II class was won by EH Münchhausen TSF (EH Hohenstein - Königsstein) and his new rider Micheal Oldenbourg (yes, Wiesenhof switched riders - again!). He was closely followed by the approved Kapriolan F (Exclusiv - Karon), then Rondo Classico (EH Mackensen) and Harlem (EH Consul). Both Kapriolan and Harlem were ridden by Eva Zieglwalner. The last in the list of placed pairs was Brazil with Christine Hasper.

The short Grand Prix was again won by EH Münchhausen TSF, followed by Kapriolan F and Harlem, then Rondo Classico and EH Montverdi TSF (EH Partout - Matador), who is now the personal riding horse of Wiesenhof owner Valerie Hüttner and serves as school master and competition horse in one. In Hanover however, he was shown by new Wiesenhof head trainer Michael Oldenbourg.

The show jumper class at S* level was won by Franziska Bunte and Poor Grey, followed by Jörg Eicke and his Picobello (by Arc de Triomphe - Abdullah). Third place was won by the approved premium stallion Sky Dancer (EH Beg xx - Habicht), followed by Bel Espace Go, also approved, by EH Maizauber. The last placed pair was Andreas Dibowskii and Gestüt Hörem's Caruso Nero (by Arcus xx).

And on a note for North America: Debra Tyler's Lord Luciano (by Enrico Caruso - Unkenruf) did very well at this competition. He placed 2nd in the suitability class for 4 and 5 yr olds, and placed 4th in the dressage horse class at 2nd level (70%). On top of that, his daughter Dolce Lucia was the second most expensive foal at the auction!!
