The Trakehner Influence in Hanover

Trakehner Private Stallions in Hanover - Consul, Caprimond and Co -

So while no more Trakehner stallions were present in the State Stud, it was clearly the "hour" of private stallion owners. And with them, one took the "Trakehner mix" to the ultimate level: Burkhard Wahler and his Klosterhof Medingen shaped Hanover's understanding of Trakehner "refinement" blood to a new understanding through his flagship stallions EH Caprimond and EH Hohenstein. And at the same time, it was Hubertus Poll's major sire EH Consul, who did the real refining and added invaluable and fresh traits to a the mare base in Hanover.

EH Consul

EH Consul by Swazi xx out of ES+Pr St Cornau by Lothar - Altan. This amazing bay stallion had already left a huge stamp on the Trakehner breed when he started his late career in Hanover. He provided the perfect mix of "noblesse and caliber", a stallion almost perfect in his harmonious body, his top line, the correctness of his foundation and the masculine expression of his face. Consul added much neded (and very high quality) blood through his sire Swazi xx, who also sired the 3/4 brother Comtesso and the international CCI*** eventer and approved stallion Grand Prix. Swazi's maternal brother Saros xx was an equally successful TB import into the warmblood breeds. Consul's damline is among the best of the breed, especially because of an endelss list of highly successful sport horses. The foundation mare was Corrida, a Bussard-daughter from Trakehnen, whose big family has branched out today and also produced such individuals as the two-times Olympic show jumper Almox Prints J, the Hanoverian approved Trakehner Connery, the popular Trakehner premium stallion Cadeau, the proven performance sire Cornus, as well as the younger Checkpoint and Carel Deak.

EH Caprimond

EH Caprimond by Karon out of Pr St Capri by EH Mackensen - Herzbube. Caprimond was the reserve champion of the Neumünster approvals in 1986 and simply never made a wrong move in his life: winner of the 100 day test in Adelheitsdorf, reserve champion at the Bundeschampionat, winning S-level dressage by the age of 7, and proven at Grand Prix level more than enough. Caprimond showed actively until he was 20 years old (!), ridden by Theresa Wahler in her teens across European Young Rider Tours. Unforgettable were his appearances in huge, packed arenas in Oldenburg and Neumünster with the 13 year old girl on his back, piaffing away. Caprimond has many fans and equally many critics, but one fact remains undeniable: he opened the door for the modern Trakehner in Hanover. He manifested "type" and rideability at an all new level, and his offspring remain high in demand with breeders and riders alike. A few years ago, a bronze statue of Caprimond was placed at Klosterhof Medingen. And it brought back memories of a certain bronze statue of another Trakehner stallion that used to stand in front of the Trakehnen castel. While Caprimond is certainly no new Tempelhüter, he undeniably is a stamping stallion of our time.

EH Hohenstein

EH Caprimond out of Helena XXV by Matador - Grimsel. With Hohenstein, his sire provided the ultimate heir. Hohenstein's major advantage is his color, which he passes on dominantly. In a time when appearance is everything and black stallions breed twice as much as grey or chestnut stallions, when breeding decisions are actually based on "color", Hohenstein started on the right track. He is also a very high quality stallion....like his sire, he received a premium title at the approvals in Neumünster. Hohenstein won the dressage part of his 100 day test (in Adelheitsdorf), and won a bronze medal at the Bundeschampionat. He won S-level dressage by the age of 7, but unlike his sire, never made it to Grand Prix. You can argue that when breeding 200+ mares a year for 10 years, priorities are set. Hohenstein has established a name for himself especially for high quality Hanoverian daughters. He tops the rankings for type and riding horse points in Hanover for years, and has a pretty impressive number of Bundeschampionat qualifiers from Hanover under his belt - mostly in the 5 and 6 year old dressage divisions. He is also the sire of the sensational His Highness, the highest priced approved stallion from Verden until.....well.....until another part Trakehner showed up in 2005. More about that in the next part!
